Manchester City managed to win the second round of the Premier League, beating Newcastle 1:0. The match was more or less in their hands, although neither they nor the Magpies had many big chances.
The opening twenty minutes didn’t offer a proper chance, the biggest commotion in the stands was caused when a good pass from Phil Foden was mishandled by Erling Haaland. It was clear that the Norwegian sniper was in a bit of a crisis.
It wasn’t until the 29th minute that Mateo Kovacic fired, but his attempt was blocked by the Black and White defence. Two minutes later, the Citizens had already found the key to Newcastle’s locked door. Julian Álvarez’s shot from the penalty spot gave Nick Pope no chance.
In the 39th minute, Haaland’s left-footed shot was again in action, this time a cross just missing the far post. When Anthony Gordon missed a rare chance for the visitors late in the first half, it was 1-0 going into the booths.
After the change of sides, the visitors were more active, but did not get a shot off from the slight pressure. On the other hand, Haaland threatened in the 60th minute, but his cross was stopped at the last moment by Magpies stopper Fabian Schär.
The Citizens controlled the game, Haaland took a shot from time to time, but otherwise the crowd wasn’t too amused. In the 70th minute, Harvey Barnes got on the ball and finally hit the space between Manchester City’s three posts.
Newcastle’s dominant ten minutes between the 70th and 80th minutes did not lead to a finish again and after that the Citizens kept the game in check. In the 89th minute, Phil Foden still missed an insurance shot, his finish from an angle cleared by goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Manchester City beat Newcastle 1-0 at the Etihad and together with Brighton remain 100 percent.
