The Women’s World Cup is currently in its second round of preliminary groups, with three matches on the schedule on Wednesday.
Japan beat Costa Rica 2-0, Spain beat Zambia 5-0 and the Canadians beat Ireland 2-1. However, it was in the last mentioned match that everyone witnessed a historic moment.
Not only did the fans not have to wait long for the opening goal of the match, but they also saw something really great.
Ireland captain and Arsenal player Katie McCabe curled the ball into the net straight from a corner kick. Thus, she scored her team’s leading goal in the fourth minute, while it was also the first goal scored by Irish women footballers at the World Cup.
You can see the whole moment in the attached video below, posted by CT Sport on their Twitter account.
It must be added, however, that the lucky shot did not lead to victory. The score was still tied at 1-1 at the end of the first half, but in the 53rd minute Adriana Leon turned the score around to give the Canadian team a 2-1 victory.
How is the situation in Group B at the moment?
After this match, Canada has taken the lead in Group B with four points. The Irish are in last place after two games.
Australia is second with three points and Nigeria is third with one point. However, these two teams are yet to play their second match in the group. They will play each other on Thursday at 12:00 our time.
