That the EURO is harder than the World Championships and that there is more competition in Europe than in South America? Lionel Messi reacts to Kylian Mbappe’s words
Kylian Mbappé has seen what it’s like to have his words turned against him. Now Lionel Messi, winner of eight Ballons d’Or and captain of the last World Cup champions, has responded to his earlier comments before the start of the European Championships.

European football fans are eagerly awaiting Friday night when the EURO 2024 programme finally kicks off. The way the odds for the European Championship are looking, England are the biggest favourites to win, with France and star Kylian Mbappé close behind.
Real Madrid’s new gem is the favourite to win the King of Scorers crown for a change. He will lead his country into the championship as captain. He will try to build on his performance at the last World Cup, where Argentina won gold after beating France.
The latter was led by Lionel Messi, at the time Mbappé’s teammate from PSG. He turned against Kylian his own words from an interview he gave before the start of the championship.
At the time, Mbappé said that the European national team faced much more competition than, for example, the South American national team and were therefore better and stronger. Brazil and Argentina supposedly do not have this advantage. Well, ironically, it was Argentina and their captain Messi who destroyed France’s dreams of a World Cup title.
Messi has now responded to Mbappé’s words
However, Mbappé said similar words before the start of this year’s European Championship. He said it is a tougher tournament than the World Cup. He said all the teams know each other well and tactically they are very similar. Still, he already sees himself playing France in the final, having already managed to reveal who he wants as his opponent.
And what does Messi say? “Kylian says the EURO is harder than the World Cup? He also said that there is not as much competition in South America as in Europe. Everyone appreciates what he plays,” the winner of eight Ballon d’Or began his comments, according to Mundo Albiceleste.
“The EURO is a very important competition, but it lacks Argentina, a three-time world champion, Brazil, a five-time world champion, or Uruguay, a two-time world champion. There are a lot of world champions missing to say that the European Championship is the hardest, right?” the Argentine let himself be heard in an interview with ESPN Argentina.
“The best teams play at the World Cup. All the world champions are there. That’s why everyone wants to be a world champion,” the Inter Miami footballer concluded his response.
