It’s been six months since one of the biggest icons of women’s MMA unexpectedly fell. Valentina Shevchenko defended her title again in March and lost, beaten by Mexican Alexa Grasso. We will see a rematch this weekend and the beauty from Kyrgyzstan is determined to win the belt back.
Valentina Shevchenko is historically one of the most dominant champions in the UFC. If it weren’t for Amanda Nunes, she would probably hold the title of best female fighter in history. However, she’s not even a champion now.
She lost her title in March when she was sensationally defeated by Alexa Grasso. It is worth mentioning, however, that the fight with Taia Santos was not a good one for the Kyrgyz beauty.
Her recent performances were questionable, and she made one mistake against Grasso. So the talk began to turn to whether the time had come when her era would be over.
“I am ready to take back what is mine. The end will come when I so choose. It won’t be any time soon. I will fight as long as I feel like it. I want to fight, I want to win the belt and I will win it,” MMA Fighting quoted her as saying.
Shevchenko will see her rematch on Saturday, September 16 and will be the favorite again. Could the loss of the belt bring her a relief from the pressure, as some long-time champions have said after the fall? Not a chance.
“I really don’t understand people who say losing the belt was a relief. It’s not a relief. It’s extra pressure because you have to get the belt back. If you ask me what to choose, I choose the pressure with the belt,” one of the best fighters in history is clear.
Her Mexican opponent should probably be wary. It has been a long time since Shevchenko has looked this focused, motivated and dangerous.
“I’m not going to play games. I’m just going to go into the cage, end the fight, destroy my opponent, take my belt back and continue doing what I need to do. There’s no after that. All my energy, strength and focus is going to Saturday,” Shevchenko said.
