Tensions in Paris. Mbappé wants to stay without a contract extension, PSG wants to sell him if he doesn’t extend. Who will back down?
Kylian Mbappé is once again the number one topic in the football world. He has unleashed an avalanche of possibilities with his contract non-renewal letter, and he and his club are vastly divided in their opinion about next season.
Kylian Mbappé is once again the number one topic in the football world. He has unleashed an avalanche of possibilities with his contract non-renewal letter, and he and his club are vastly divided in their opinion about next season.
It all kicked off on Monday night. French newspaper L’Equipe received a copy of the letter sent to PSG management by Kylian Mbappé. It said that the star Frenchman will not exercise the option in his contract, so his contract expires in 2024.
The management of the Parisian club were very angry that they first learned this information from a newspaper, where the letter arrived before the club. But that’s the least of it, the non-renewal of the main star should have shocked the PSG management very much.
Immediately, speculation began to emerge that Mbappé wanted to leave for Real Madrid, with whom he had been “flirting” since he was 18 years old and for the last two summers his arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu was imminent. However, Mbappé himself denied this.
“He’s lying… The bigger he gets, the more he misses. I have already said that I will continue at PSG next season, where I am very happy,” Mbappé wrote on Twitter in response to a Le Parisien article about his departure to Real Madrid.
He later added to AFP: “I have never discussed a contract extension with PSG. The management was informed of my decision not to extend from June 15, 2022, the letter was only sent to confirm what I had already told them.”
Mbappé’s plan is therefore as follows – to stay at PSG for next season and leave for free in June 2024. But the club’s management does not want to admit that.
Extend or leave
According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Parisian club’s position is as follows – either Mbappé extends his contract or leaves this summer. PSG does not want to come out of the whole situation as a loser and lose their main star for free. If he is to leave, the management would like to build a new project with the money from his departure.
There is an extra unknown with Mbappé’s plan. His contract was up last year and he could have left for free, coming to Real Madrid was practically a sure thing, he was also reportedly supposed to make a verbal promise to president Florentino Pérez.
Why, then, did he sign a contract at the end of May when he already knew on 15 June that he did not want to stay in Paris after that? Moreover, he let it be known that he was grateful to PSG for everything and could not make them leave for free and they would get nothing for him. So why does he want to stay until the end of his contract and leave for free this time?
He already had one opportunity to leave for free at the end of his contract and he didn’t take it. So now comes a very tense moment. Who’s gonna back out? Will Mbappé sign a new contract? Or will the player back down and transfer?
