Ten’s not flying. Barcelona is having trouble selling jerseys. Which ones are selling the most?
The iconic number doesn’t excite fans. A big problem for Barcelona is the poor sales of Ansu Fati’s jersey. Historically, the number 10 has always been the most popular among the Catalan big club’s fans. They have always come to the Camp Nou wearing the jersey of their idol. They have always prided themselves on having the best players in the world in their ranks.

For more than a decade, Leo Messi has created a monopoly on the sale of jerseys. He was light years ahead of his teammates. But before that, other number ten jerseys with name tags like Maradona, Romário, Ronaldinho…
Barcelona decided in the summer of 2021 that Ansu Fati was the best candidate to take over Leo Messi’s number. The club’s management decided that such an important number must go to an offspring of the club. The team captains gave the green light to this decision.
However, in a little over a year and a half, things have gone a bit wrong. Injuries interrupted a well-developing career and the player himself fell out of favour with the fans. There are practically no separate posters of the young striker in the official Barcelona fan shops today.
Lewandowski, Pedri and Gavi are the most sought-after jerseys. Even the Catalan club’s two biggest stores do not display any jerseys with the number 10, which suggests that this is a product that is not in great demand at the moment.
There is only one number 10 dummy at Camp Nou, but it is displayed alongside the rest of the line-up as a promotion for the fourth kit. “It is not even among the six best-selling jerseys now,” said one of the store’s employees. “If you want Fati’s jersey, you have to ask for his name printed on it because we don’t have it in stock,” he explained.
For the past few weeks, Gavi’s jersey has been the best seller, after being given the number 6. “It’s teenage madness. Right behind Gavi are currently Pedri and Lewandowski. Ter Stegen’s, Frenkie’s and Araujo’s jerseys are also selling well,” the employee mentioned.
The big problem for Barcelona is that the legendary number 10 no longer attracts much interest. The club is looking for a solution. At the moment, the marketing department is the most involved.
The president himself, Joan Laporta, said in his press conference on Thursday that the sale of Ansu Fati is not currently being considered. But it is clear to all that the trust will not last forever. Even more so if the interest of several Premier League clubs is confirmed.
