When Anett Kontaveit won the Thursday afternoon match with a smooth 2:0 set victory over Tereza Martincova, it was clear that Friday’s quarterfinal in Tallinn would be about two of our tennis players. Both Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Muchova will face very tough opponents. Brenda Fruhvirtova is also fighting for more points in the rankings.
Barbora Krejčíková is making up for her bad mood from the singles results in Tallinn this season. She did not fare well against players outside the elite top 50 and mainly gained success in doubles. She defeated Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 7:5 and 6:3 in the eighth round.
The Brazilian player Beatriz Haddad Maiová, who knocked out the Czech player Linda Noskova in the last round 6: 1 and 7: 5, will play against her. She is in very good form this season and has already moved up to 15th in the world rankings. The match is expected to be evenly matched, but Krejcikova’s recent promising results definitely do not put the Ivancic native in the role of an underdog.
Karolína Muchová (224th), who has been hampered by constant injuries in the last year and is therefore far away from her opponent Kai Kanepi (32nd) in the rankings, also has a chance for a good result. The experienced Estonian player managed to defeat American Ann Li (7::5, 7::5) after much suffering.
Muchova had to turn things around in the eighth round against Viktoria Golubic, when she lost the first set. But then she gave her opponent a canary and took the last set 6::2. Muchova will be aiming for her first semifinal against Kanepi since the Australian Open 2021 and given her form, advancing is definitely within her reach.
The young Czech hope Brenda Fruhvirtova (166th) will rise up the rankings again. She is currently pulling a respectable streak in singles, having not lost since May 30 at the Junior French Open, and is currently on a 27-match winning streak. In the quarter-finals of the ITF tournament in San Sebastian, our hope will face the 7 years older Dutchwoman Vedder (242nd) on clay and the odds predict a smooth win for Fruhvirt.
The quarterfinals of the ITF tournament will also feature another Czech, Sara Bejlek (198th). She will face 104-ranked Akugue Noha of Germany at the tournament in Italy. In the men’s singles quarter-finals, Andrew Paulson, who will challenge Frenchman Chazal (644th), and Daniel Siniakov (1312th), who is the underdog against Germany’s Handel (635th), will play at the home tournament in Prostejov.
In the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Parma, Italy, the experienced doubles player Renata Voráčová will play in the doubles, who together with the Polish Kania-Chodunová will challenge the Czech pair Anastasia Detiuc – Miriam Kolodziejová. The Lisbon Challenger will also feature Zdenek Kolar, who will try his luck in the doubles semi-finals on clay against home team Goncalo Oliveira. They will face the pair of Guinard – Martinez.
