Ten Hag’s coaching chair is wobbling alarmingly, with talk of his sacking after just two Premier League games
The new Manchester United coach was not supposed to have it easy at Old Trafford, but the reality has far exceeded the Red Devils fans’ darkest imaginations. Two games into the new season, two defeats from clubs who on paper shouldn’t have been sniffing around against United.
The new Manchester United coach was not supposed to have it easy at Old Trafford, but the reality has far exceeded the Red Devils fans’ darkest imaginations. Two games into the new season, two defeats from clubs who on paper shouldn’t have been sniffing around against United.
The fact that the Reds’ Manchester squad is not up to the quality of Chelsea, perhaps not even Arsenal, let alone Liverpool or Manchester City, was already an open secret last season.
But just how much of a problem lies inside the Theatre of Dreams is only now becoming fully apparent, and Eric ten Hague’s position is now probably not envied by even his most die-hard opponents. It was he who was supposed to take United back to the limelight with his, Ajax-tested, combination football.
But the start of his engagement in England looks exactly the opposite. The opening home loss to Brighton did not fill the hearts of the red-clad supporters with much hope, they had no idea what surprises their favourites had in store for them in the next round.
A week later, a much harder blow came at Brentford, who gave the Red Devils four goals in the first forty-five minutes. Incidentally, it was the first time in the history of the opponents’ pitch that United players left after the first half with such a drubbing.
The need for new reinforcements seems absolutely necessary and deadly. Although the club’s directive has dragged Christian Eriksen into Ten Hag’s squad, it is still to be seen how the endless saga surrounding Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, for whom the Dutch coach is waiting like a mercy, will play out.
Either way, a look at the EPL table is shocking not only for Manchester United fans. The 20-time champion of the highest league competition in England is in last place with a score of 1::6. Erik ten Hag, or rather the management of the club, will have to change something quickly.
