In his glory days, Steven Gerrard displayed his footballing genius to the full. He was undoubtedly one of the most popular footballers in the world, but in the Czech Republic, one recent incident has changed the way we look at him.
Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston on May 30, 1980. However, the vast majority of his football career has been with Liverpool, where he also started out in the youth categories.
He broke into the first team at the age of eighteen. In the beginning, in particular, he alternated the central midfielder position with the edge of midfield, but now football fans have him pegged as a classic central midfielder.
During his time at Liverpool, Gerrard managed to play in 504 competitive matches, scoring 120 goals. During these 17 years, Gerrard managed to win the Champions League, UEFA Cup, English and European Super Cup with the team. He never managed to win a league title with Liverpool.
In particular, winning the Champions League is quite prized by the football public. Liverpool dominated this European competition after winning the memorable final against AC Milan, when they turned the half-time score 0:3 and won on penalties. Gerrard led his team in this match with the captain’s armband.
Gerrard also made his name in the English national team. He appeared in 114 matches for the national team and decided to retire from the national team in 2014. A year later, he then left Liverpool as well.
In 2015, Gerrard decided not to continue in England and went overseas to LA Galaxy to finish his career. Gerrard was one of the first European stars to go to MLS and greatly increased the popularity of the competition.
After his playing career ended, Gerrard decided to embark on a coaching career. He was the head coach of Rangers for three years, and Czech fans remember him very well from the match against Slavia Prague in which the Ondrej Kudela incident with Glen Kamara took place.
However, Gerrard had success with the team and so Aston Villa pulled him into their team two years ago. Gerrard’s results were insufficient though, so he was replaced by Unai Emery a year later.
