The Negreira case continues to dominate the Spanish football scene. This isless than a week since news first emerged that Barcelona had paid repeatedly to Enrique Negreira’s company, owned by the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees.

The payments, which took place between 2016 and 2018 and totalled €1.4 million, were to be made for reports regarding specific referees who were allegedly used by the first team to ‘better treat’ players on the pitch.

Many people associated with Spanish football, including La Liga president Javier Tebas, are calling for Joan Laporta to resign if the Barcelona president cannot provide a reasonable explanation for the scandal.

Several Spanish clubs, including Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, Betis, Villarreal and Real Sociedad, for example, were also logically furious at the news and subsequently issued a statement condemning Barcelona’s behaviour regarding the Negreiro case.

Real Madrid was absent from the list of teams complaining. This is despite the argument that they would be the ones who would gain the most if Barcelona were severely punished. So we can look elsewhere for the context of this decision.

The two clubs did, in fact, team up a few months ago and disagree with the CVC agreement that was drawn up by La Liga. In addition, the White Ballet and the Blaugranas have in common that they are both still interested in playing in the new Super League.

The Catalan big club is certainly not giving up its fight in the El Caso Negreira case. Real Madrid, albeit surprisingly for many, has given the Catalan giant a helping hand. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be punished, although it has already been confirmed that it will not be sanctioned from a sporting point of view.

The tax authorities are investigating the matter at the moment. Especially because of the invoices paid that started the whole affair.

In addition, most La Liga clubs are demanding that their own governing body intervene. The Spanish top flight itself cannot intervene in the investigation because of the statute of limitations. On the other hand, the competition’s president Javier Tebas says that the league will pursue all avenues of investigation.

The so-called Negreira case has thus gradually developed into one of the biggest scandals in the history of Spanish football.
