Bayern failed to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals, only drawing 1-1 at home against Villarreal and losing their away game to drop out of the competition. Robert Lewandowski and Samu Chukwueze scored on the other side.

Jamal Musiala had the first chance of the match, but his attempt was blocked. In the 15th minute, Thomas Müller appeared behind the yellow line, but missed the ball perfectly from a volley.

In the 29th minute, Musiala got into a good position but his header was just wide of the target. Gerard Moreno had the last chance of the first half but sent the ball into the side netting with his left foot.

After the change of sides, Dayot Upamecano burned a great opportunity, but in the 52nd minute the home fans could have finished the job. Bayern’s pressing worked on Villarreal’s crosses and Robert Lewandowski then opened the scoring with the help of the bar.

Julian Nagelsmann’s charges went for the opening goal, but were inaccurate in the final stages and rarely found the net. In the 71st minute, Thomas Müller had a unique chance, but his header just missed.

The Bavarians then missed a couple of chances and were punished in the 87th minute. A quick break by the visitors was finished with an accurate shot by substitute Samu Chukwueze.

Villarreal had already secured a promotion draw and knocked out the favoured Bayern. Liverpool or Benfica await them in the semi-finals.
