The Superliga as a big football project of rich and famous clubs ended about as quickly as it was announced. However, it is still fighting for its life in the sun. The new head of the project revealed that the creation and the form of the Superliga is still being worked on.
It was a shock when, in one evening, the big European clubs announced the formation of the Super League. However, due to huge protests from fans, players, coaches and various football authorities, most teams chose to back out of the project.
Not so Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. These three teams are still keeping the project alive. In addition, A22 Sports Management has been hired to organise the Super League. Bernd Reichart has been appointed as the new CEO of the competition.
A legal battle is currently being fought with UEFA in the European Court of Justice. The outcome will affect the shape of European football.
If UEFA is recognised as a market monopoly, the Super League will be allowed to continue building the project without hindrance. Otherwise, UEFA will be able to impose sanctions on the three clubs in question.
But Reichart does not accept failure. On the contrary, he has already revealed the season when the Superliga could see its first edition. It should be the 2024/25 season.
Outside of the legal battle, the format of the whole competition is now being resolved, which has been one of the most criticized things about the whole project. “I believe in an active and extended dialogue to shape a sustainable sporting model for European football,” Football-España quotes the Superliga boss as saying.
“We want to reach out to stakeholders in the European football community and expand our vision. I believe that the fans will also be very sympathetic to the project. The format will never be an obstacle,” added Reichart.
It appears that permanent membership of clubs in the competition will be ruled out. Instead, the openness of the competition is being addressed. We should see a decision on whether the Superliga will be able to go ahead with its plans in December.
