The only man in the pool, Jiri Vesely, had a very difficult draw in the form of South African Kevin Anderson. And the match was more than even. In the end, it was a five-set marathon lasting almost 4 and a half hours, in which Veselý failed three times in shortened games and lost 2: 3 sets (6::7, 6::4, 6::3, 6::7).
The women were fifty percent successful as the favourites confirmed their roles. Barbora Krejcikova flew headlong into the match against Australian Sharma and soon led 6::0, 2::0. The second set finally lasted 54 minutes and in one hour and 15 minutes it was all over with a score of 6: 0, 6: 4. In the second round, the 9th player in the world ranking awaits the American McHale.
Markéta Vondroušová also scored a win, but she went the opposite way to Krejčíková. In the first set, the Tokyo silver medallist had to fight off two set points at 3:5. However, she did it perfectly and from that moment on the newly engaged Czech didn’t lose a game. After a 7::5, 6::0 win, Russia’s Daria Kasatkina awaits Vondroušová.
The match of Tereza Martincova against Victoria Azarenka from Belarus also saw a long winning streak. This time, however, to the detriment of the Czech. Martincova came at the experienced tennis player at lightning pace and led 4: 1. Since then, however, she hasn’t added a single game and after losing 4::6, 0::6 she ends up in the first round, as she did last year.
Marie Bouzkova also dropped out. Her opponent was Naomi Osaka, who is currently one of the best tennis players in the world. Bouzkova held on until 4::4 in the first set, but then the Japanese didn’t let her do anything and after losing 4::6, 1::6 she finished the match just like Martincova.
Today, the Czech Republic’s biggest iron in the fire is probably Karolína Plíšková. Her sister Kristyna or Petra Kvitova will play next. There are no representatives among the men.
