Although the Uruguayan striker disappeared from the eyes of European fans in the summer, he continues to shine in South American football competitions and shows that he has a lot to offer in terms of football.
Luis Suárez first returned to his hometown team Club Nacional after his stint at Atlético Madrid and helped win the title. However, he eventually headed to Brazil. In January, he signed for Gremio.
And he and his team could hardly have started the season better. He’s scoring goals, passing them on. He’s one of the team’s key figures. Even at 36, he can’t be written off.
Gremio have 21 points after seven rounds, have won all 7 games and have a decent 8 point lead. And much of that is down to Suárez.
Last time out, the Uruguayan striker helped the club to a 2-0 win over Avenida. However, there was a controversial moment in the match, which of course Suárez couldn’t miss.
And what happened? It was the 57th minute of the match when Suárez was fouled in the corner of the pitch in the opponents’ half. While his teammates decided to protest to the referee about the foul, the Gremio players quickly played a standard situation.
Naturally, a goal was scored from that and Avenida had another problem to solve besides protesting about the foul. Goal conceded. The players’ unrest and anger understandably grew and the referee awarded them two straight red cards.
To make matters worse, several soldiers with shields arrived on the pitch to protect the referee and disperse the players. The match then continued and Gremio won against a weakened opponent 2: 0.
