Stormtrooper Kyrgios spat at a fan and leaned on the referees: they’re 90 and can’t see anything!
Once Nick Kyrgios takes the court, entertainment is always guaranteed. The Australian stormtrooper once again drew attention to himself in the first round of Wimbledon when he spat towards an offending spectator and then leaned into the umpires.
Once Nick Kyrgios takes the court, entertainment is always guaranteed. The Australian stormtrooper once again drew attention to himself in the first round of Wimbledon when he spat towards an offending spectator and then leaned into the umpires.
Kyrgios is practically loved or hated by tennis fans, there is almost no in-between. But even if you belong to the latter, you have to admit that you’re never bored with the Australian on court.
the 27-year-old tennis player is known for his love and frequent interaction with spectators, whether it be his fans or those who try to upset him. In the first round at the All England Club, the latter situation was on display.
Kyrgios was playing with Britain’s Paul Jubb and emotions and anger were spilling out of him. He had a big problem with one spectator who shouted at him the whole match and tried to upset him. So after the win, the Australian stormtrooper turned around and spat towards the spectator.
The situation was caught on camera, but Kyrgios himself had no problem admitting it. “Yes, when I won, I turned on him. I’ve had to deal with a lot of hate and negativity for a long time, so I don’t feel like I owe this guy anything,” Kyrgios said at the post-match press conference.
Kyrgios then added that he had asked the head referee, Maria Cicak, to ban the vulgar spectator. However, she did not listen to his request.
“Someone in the audience shouted that I was shit. Is that normal? No, it’s not. But it happens again and again. I think it’s a measure of respect. Why do they find it acceptable?” Kyrgios did not understand.
And as is customary, the 40th-ranked player also complained about the umpires. And this time he took a swipe at them.
“These people are over 90, they can’t see the ball,” Kyrgios complained about the older linesmen.
What about Kyrgios now? Wimbledon officials are considering a fine, but the Canberra native is not counting on it. According to his own words, he has done nothing wrong and does not intend to apologise.
Despite all the vicissitudes, Kyrgios brought the match to a victorious end, defeating Jubba in five sets. In the second round he will face Filip Krajinovic of Serbia.
