The frenzy at the UFC 279 pre-fight press conference
A fool at the next numbered UFC 279 event. Headliners Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz made sure to cause a stir when their teams engaged in a mass brawl unprecedented in the history of the organization.
The reason for this was a seemingly innocent shove from Kevin Holland. He called UFC owner White Khamzat Chimaev “the most valuable commodity” a liar who only plays tough guy in front of the cameras.
The fierce Chimaev took it very hard and confronted the American fighter. A mass melee ensued backstage, which resulted in the cancellation of the entire press conference by charismatic promoter Dana White.
The mass brawl sparked a backlash of disgust among UFC fighters
This, of course, was not borne well by the fans and media in attendance, who were waiting for questions and answers from the tournament’s main players. There were also responses of disgust from current UFC fighters over the unfortunate event, which damages the name of the organization and the sport itself.
According to MMA Fighting, Derek Brunson urged the main players of the mass brawl to stop acting like idiots before the fight. “Don’t ruin press conferences, weigh-ins or the fights themselves, people pay their hard-earned money to be a part of them,” said the current UFC middleweight top five.
“How unprofessional, ” complained Bo Nickal. “We’re literally fighting in the cage and they still have to prove something outside of it, calm down,” said the current rising star, who recently landed a UFC contract as part of Dana White’s Contender Series.
Hopefully we’ll rarely see footage like this. Because situations like this don’t help the top sport, which MMA at the highest level certainly is, in its long-running battle to tear down the label of aggressive individuals who go to the cage to hurt themselves.
