Stones: Guardiola’s brain is breathtaking. It’s incredible how he can make us do what he believes in
Pep Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the world. He is an amazing tactician who is always trying to figure out how to outsmart the opposition. And his genius can surprise even his charges who work with him every day.
Pep Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the world. He is an amazing tactician who is always trying to figure out how to outsmart the opposition. And his genius can surprise even his charges who work with him every day.
It’s true that Guardiola has a privileged position at Manchester City and the management will bring him virtually any reinforcements he can think of. But money isn’t everything, just look to his neighbours in Manchester.
The Premier League Citizens absolutely dominate. They have dominated four of the last five editions, only once coming second. All that’s missing is Champions League success, but the English league looks set for another title.
One of the reinforcements was John Stones, who arrived at City in 2016 from Everton and Guardiola made him the second most expensive defender in the world at the time. And in six years of working together, the England international has learned a lot from the Spanish coach.
“I honestly thought I knew enough about football when I left Everton,” he told Goal. “But after I started training under him, after about a week I thought ‘I don’t know anything about football ‘,” Stones explained.
“His brain and how he sees into other teams and their tactics, I can’t put it into words how he does it. Just the way his mind thinks about football and how he passes that on to us players to do exactly what he wants and what he believes in, it’s unbelievable,” the City defender paid tribute to his coach.
And what is it like working under Guardiola? Given the successes, it will be no cakewalk under the 51-year-old coach.
“It’s intense. And he asks a lot of us. And I think that’s why he’s been so successful in the last six years I’ve been with him. It’s in his blood that he won’t accept being second best,” the 28-year-old stopper added.
