Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev will make the second semi-final of the Australian Open men’s singles. The Russian tennis player is the paper favourite to win, but he will certainly not have an easy task ahead of him. How will the match turn out?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is a 23-year-old Greek tennis player. He is currently ranked fourth in the ATP rankings. His career high at the Australian Open is the semifinals, which he played in 2019 and 2021. On Friday, the Athens native will try to improve this statistic.
Tsitsipas is in a good frame of mind for his opening Grand Slam tournament. He lost four sets on his way to the semi-finals, with American Taylor Fritz causing him the most trouble (4::6, 6::4, 4::6, 6::3 and 6::4). Now we can say for sure that even the elbow surgery did not slow him down.
But the question remains whether his performance will be enough to take on world number two Daniil Medvedev. The Russian is looking for his second Grand Slam triumph in a row. Last year, he reached the final of the Australian Open, where he fell to Novak Djokovic.
The 25-year-old Russian, who undoubtedly has ambitions to dethrone Novak Djokovic, has lost four sets in the tournament so far. In the quarter-final against Auger-Alliasimev, he was already 0:2 down in sets. He even had to face a match point, but managed to turn the match in his favour, showing his mental resilience.
If we look at the statistics of their matches, we will see that this will be the ninth time they have met. The more successful player so far is Medvedev, who could enjoy victory on six occasions.
So what to bet on? Medvedev is the paper favourite to reach the final. He would like to follow up last year’s 6:4, 6:2 and 7:5 victories (it was also the semi-final of the Australian Open). The Moscow native should therefore make it to the final again.
