Staying at United? That was probably the last option in my mind. I always want to catch, to fight for a position in goal, said Kovář

Matěj Kovář is a new signing for Bayer Leverkusen. A few weeks ago his situation was completely different, he wanted to return to Sparta, but there was also talk about staying at United. How much did he have this option in mind?

The situation regarding Matej Kovar was quite unclear. Sparta fans were counting on him staying at their favourite club for another season, but United had other plans for him.

Thanks to the excellent spring they decided to give him a chance in the preparation, Kovář impressed the Red Devils fans and then it was decided whether he would return to Sparta or not. Manchester are definitely not stupid and they realised that they can monetise Kovar well.

And when Sparta were not willing to pay the required amount, they waited for another buyer. That was eventually Bayer Leverkusen and Kovar will fight for the number one spot with Lukas Hradecky.

But has the Czech goalkeeper thought about the option of staying at United? Some fans were hoping he would get a chance, but he would have to cover the back of a new signing in Andre Onana.

“I would say this was probably the last option in my mind. I always want to catch, to fight for a position in goal. Here it was clear that Manchester were looking for a goalkeeper who they could bring in for big money and who you just can’t get past in goal.

The first priority for me was to return to Sparta. Then Manchester decided to deal with my situation differently and Leverkusen’s interest came at the right time. Thanks to my agency Sport Invest, which did a great job, we made it to Leverkusen.

I liked the vision of the club and the plans they had for me. I’ll be closer to the Czech Republic and my family, Leverkusen plays regularly in the cups. I tookall this into account when making my decision,” said Kovář in an interview with Sport.cz.
