Stars in the shadows: Dominic Calvert-Lewin
In addition to footballers with the most famous names, there are also those who remain somewhat in the shadows on the football fields of Europe, yet they are often key and indispensable figures in their clubs.
In addition to footballers with the most famous names, there are also those who remain somewhat in the shadows on the football fields of Europe, yet they are often key and indispensable figures in their clubs. One of these stars in the shadows is the English Everton FC striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Starting out in Sheffield
The footballing journey began for Calvert-Lewin in Sheffield United’s academy, where he joined at the age of eight. Under the auspices of The Blades, he progressed through all age groups to the A-team. He made his debut there on 25 April 2015, when he was just 18 years old.
But after just six months, Sheffield management sent him on loan to Stalybridge, where he was to play the rest of the season. The six-month stay at Stalybridge was followed by a one-year loan spell at Northampton, where the young forward netted eight times in 26 games.
After his summer return to Sheffield he expected to get a chance in the first team. However, this did not happen, thanks to the famous Everton. The Toffees’ directive sent €1.8 million to Sheffield for the 19-year-old striker and the transfer was a done deal.
Thanks to Koeman
Getting into the line-up was not easy for the promising cannonballer. Indeed, Belgian Romelu Lukaku reigned supreme in his position in the blue jersey at the time. He made his debut for Everton on 13 December 2016, under the guidance of Dutch coach Ronald Koeman.
In his first season at Goodison Park, he scored just 5 goals and 2 assists in 21 games. The following one was a different story. In terms of the number of games played. He scored 44 goals, 8 goals were not enough, but he was still a very young footballer and Koeman saw a lot of potential in him.
One of the best strikers in England
And he saw it right. He netted fifteen goals last season and 21 accurate shots in all competitions this season and, for the time being at least, he is living up to the reputation with which the Liverpool club bought him from League Three Sheffield.
Currently Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of the best Premier League players in his position. At twenty-four years of age, he is one of the driving forces of The Toffees and the fact that he is in England’s nomination for the upcoming EURO is a clear proof of his qualities.
