Stan Wawrinka hasn’t played a match on the ATP circuit in almost a year. Now the 36-year-old Swiss is preparing for a big comeback. He’s signed up for the second biggest Grand Slam of the season.
His last ATP match was last March, when he lost in three sets to South African Lloyd Harris at Doha.
Then came a forced break during which Stan Wawrinka underwent ankle and Achilles tendon surgeries. However, the recovery in his case stretched over a long 11 months. As a result, he missed the rest of the season and the Tokyo Olympics.
But now he’s finally ready for a big comeback. He’s even announced in advance which grand slam he’ll be returning to. He has confirmed his participation at Roland Garros. Matches in this tournament are played in three sets
Despite this, the Swiss is very determined because tennis is still number one for him. But he says he will now treat tennis as fun rather than work.
“Stan the Man”, as Wawrinka is known on the circuit, has won three Grand Slams and 16 ATP tournaments in his career.
It is still unclear if Wawrinka will enter one of the preliminary tournaments before the main event in Paris. He has not entered any tournaments on American concrete.
He took to his Twitter account to share videos of him practicing his miraculous one-handed backhand.
the 36-year-old Wawrinka is a former world number three. But thanks to a forced hiatus, he has dropped to 171st in the ATP rankings.
This year’s Roland Garros begins on May 22. Wawrinka has reached the finals of this tournament twice, including once when he managed to win the entire Grand Slam, defeating current world number one Novak Djokovic in the 2015 final. Let’s see what kind of form he returns in this year.
