Several interesting sporting events will take place in 2022. There will be no shortage of dramatic experiences. In the coming months, the Winter Olympics in Beijing, the Biathlon World Championships and the Ice Hockey World Championships will take place. Which other highlights should Czech fans not miss?
WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES 2022
The absolute highlight of the year. The Czech Olympic team will have plenty of irons in the fire. Ledecká, Sáblíková or Samková will have the best chance to win a medal. Davidova may surprise, the Czech national hockey team would need a good result. The Czech Olympic maximum is 8 medals (Sochi 2014). Will the Czechs come close to it in Beijing?
Ice Hockey World Championship
This year’s world championship will be hosted by Finland and played in Helsinki and Tampere. Czech Republic will have 2 chances to end the medal fast (10 years without a medal). The first chance will be the 2022 Winter Olympics, the second will be the World Championships in Finland.
The Czechs will have a better chance of success at the Olympics, as there will be no NHL players participating. Which result can be considered a success? Reaching the semi-finals would be a nice result. Winning a medal is not unattainable, but with the current state of the Czech team it is quite unrealistic.
Tennis Grand Slams
Czech tennis in 2021? A fairy tale. Pliskova reached the Wimbledon final. Krejcikova won singles and doubles at Roland Garros. She and her partner Siniakova won Olympic doubles gold, and won the Tournament of Champions. Vondrously, Vondrousova won Olympic silver in singles. Czech tennis players definitely have something to build on.
They should have the highest ambitions in this edition as well. Krejcikova is one of the absolute top players in both singles and doubles. If she maintains her performance, another big success will come very soon. Karolina Pliskova is still waiting for a Grand Slam success. She reached the final at Wimbledon last year, the title was close. Will she be there this year?
Petra Kvitova will be looking for a better season. The two-time Grand Slam winner didn’t have a great year last year. A performance increase can be expected from Vondroušová, winning the silver medal gave her a big boost. Muchova can also aim very high, but she must not be let down by her poor health. Czech women’s tennis is a world power. If she confirms it with great results this season, we won’t be angry at all.
World Championships in biathlon
The World Championships in 2021 were very successful for Czech biathlon. Markéta Davidová dominated the endurance race and became world champion. It was the second individual gold in the history of Czech biathlon.
Czechs should have medal ambitions this time too. Davidova is one of the best again. If she times her form well, an attack on the precious metal is realistic. The women’s relay team is showing improved performance and the experienced Krčmář can also make a shot. The Czechs will not be the biggest favourites, but they can surprise again.
World Championships in football
The upcoming football championship will take place in Qatar, Asia. It will be an unusual tournament for several reasons. For the first time ever, the event will take place during the league season (late November to late December), and the players will have to deal with uncomfortable heat.
What about the Czechs? Their participation in this tournament is highly uncertain for now. In order to play here, the Czech team must first pass a 2-round barrage. The fate is rather favorable for the Czechs. First they will face Sweden, a playable opponent will await them after that. Schick and co. are not expecting anything easy, but this team is definitely up to it.
