Sport during menstruation: PUMA and Modibodi present Period Pep Talks
Global sports brand PUMA and absorbent apparel brand Modibodi® have produced a series of ‘Period Pep Talks’ with female athletes around the world to encourage women and girls to stay in sport during menstruation.
As part of the Period Pep Talk campaign, PUMA and Modibodi have designed a revolutionary new collection of sportswear with the Period Pep Talk patent. The new range, which is on sale now, will help girls and women to feel comfortable and confident while playing sports and other activities during menstruation.
Period Pep Talks are a response to the results of a global study that revealed one in two girls stop playing sports due to menstruation. The interviews feature global female athletes including NRLW star Tiana Penitani, European sprinter Jodie Williams and former professional car racer Naomi Schiff.
The female athletes speak directly to young and teenage girls considering quitting the sport they love due to puberty and menstruation. The athletes share their own stories and experiences with the girls to encourage them to stick with their sport.
“Data from our May 2022 global study revealed that women and girls agree on the need to talk more openly about menstruation, even in the world of sport. That’s why we are proud to partner with PUMA to create Period Pep Talks and work with athletes to raise awareness of this issue on a global scale,” says Sarah Forde, Head of Sustainability and Public Affairs at Modibodi.
PUMA athlete Jodie Williams says:. It’s a global issue that we all need to talk about to break the taboo.
The PUMA x Modibodi Period Pep Talks are a great way to connect with girls who are considering quitting their sporting careers and help normalise menstruation. We need to challenge the stigma that women can’t be active when they are menstruating or experiencing some sort of life upheaval.”
In the words of PUMA athlete Tiana Penitani:. The bulkiness of the pads, the discomfort of the tampons and the fear of blood leakage made me really nervous every month when playing.
One of the things I like about the new PUMA x Modibodi sportswear is that it’s designed to support the body during menstruation and movement, so you can play without worrying about leaking or the discomfort of disposable pads. It’s so liberating!”
PUMA athlete Naomi Schiff says:. The PUMA x Modibodi collaboration not only brings innovation to the sportswear market, but gives all girls and women the opportunity to wear clothing that makes it easier to be active at any time of the cycle. At the same time, it opens up the opportunity to transform the social debate around the perception of menstruation in sport in a bigger way.”
The revolutionary collection combines Modibodi’s unique patented Activewear Technology with PUMA’s world-class expertise. Featuring design that represents innovation at its best, the collection consists of two styles of activewear:: leggings and cycling shorts, both available in two colours:: eggplant and black.
This is the second venture in the PUMA x Modibodi powerhouse collaboration, following the launch of their first range of underwear designed for menstruation and resistant to urine leakage in May this year.
“With 50 per cent of girls experiencing discomfort from disposable menstrual products such as pads and tampons during sport or other physical exertion, we felt it was important to design a line of leak-proof activewear that would make menstrual sports more comfortable and empowering than ever before, ” said Erin Longin, Global Business Unit Director, Running and Training at PUMA.
