Another big step by Western Europe in the fight against Russian aggression and Vladimir Putin. According to BILD, UEFA has decided to expel Spartak Moscow from the Europa League.
Spartak advanced from a very difficult group where they faced Napoli, Leicester and Legia Warsaw. The Moscow side advanced from the first place and secured a direct ticket to the eighth round, where they were to face RB Leipzig.
But that’s probably not going to happen. Because of the war in Ukraine caused by the Russian Federation, the West is trying to find all possible ways to punish Russia and turn the people against the psychopathic President Putin. Sanctions against the world’s largest country come in almost all sports.
Initially, UEFA banned Russia from playing its matches on home soil, but it should have gone further. According to the respected BILD newspaper, UEFA has decided to cancel the matches between Spartak and Leipzig and ban the Russian side from the Europa League. Leipzig would have advanced directly to the quarter-finals without a fight.
The German side admitted that they had held intense talks with Uefa about the Europa League eighth-final against Spartak. Officially, the decision is expected to come out during Monday.
Spartak is the last Russian team left in the European Cup, Zenit was eliminated by Spain’s Betis in the Europa League playoffs.
