Sparta Prague started their journey through the Europa League group stage perfectly, but the double against Lyon brought them back down to earth and now there is no time to lose. What is the key to seeing Sparta in Europe in the spring?
Sparta made it to the Europa League group stage by knocking out Rapid Vienna. With Monaco, they were only playing for a place in the Champions League play-offs.
In the group stage, Sparta started relatively well, drawing with Brondby in their opening game before beating Rangers at home. These two teams thus had a point or a zero after two games.
But that has changed, as Sparta have already played Lyon twice. In both matches they went away defeated and still have four points, but the team from Glasgow is in the same position.
Thursday’s game will be very important for Sparta. A win will propel them into the Europa League (unless Brondby beat Lyon), while a defeat will condemn them to face Brondby for the Conference play-offs.
However, Sparta may be satisfied with a draw, as the primary deciding factor is the matchups. In that case, it would only need to beat Brondby at home and it would be all set.
If Rangers can’t win at Lyon, a draw with Brondby would be enough for Sparta. To sum up – Sparta must not lose to Rangers.
