Perhaps one of the most important matches of the season will be played right at the beginning of the preliminary round
Champions League. This match can bring Sparta closer to the Champions League group, or on the contrary, send them to the Europa League group.
A win would put Sparta into the third round of the Champions League. It would also secure
the worst Europa League group.
If Sparta were to lose to Rapid, they would still have to fight for the Europa League group stage. The opponents would be St. Johnstone (Scotland) or Anorthosis Famagusta (Cyprus).
If Sparta were to win against Rapid, Sparta would face one of the following teams in the third round of the Champions League – Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Benfica (Portugal), AS Monaco (France) and the winner of the Celtic (Scotland) – Midtjylland (Denmark) match.
Thus, it would not be easy at all, on the contrary, it would probably be an underdog in every round except for a possible double-header with Celtic.
The most acceptable opponent for Sparta would be the winner of the Celtic – Midtjylland match. Sparta managed to beat Celtic twice last season.
