Sparta Prague lost 3:0 to Lyon in the Europa League. The first half was scoreless, but Lyon scored three times in the second half. Slimani scored two goals in three minutes. How does Pavel Vrba assess the defeat?
Pavel Vrba described Sparta’s first match with Lyon, which ended 4:3 in favour of the French side, as a school of life. Several young players came into the match and it was their first experience with such a big team.
The second match showed Pavel Vrba how Lyon and Sparta Prague are doing. The French team was simply several levels higher than Vrbas’ charges.
”Lyon was much more emphatic at home. Unfortunately, we were not as active as in Prague. The development of the match was therefore completely different. The result corresponds to what was on the pitch,” he said about Thursday’s result.
Sparta held on to a promising result for a very long time. Lyon did not score for the first time until the 61st minute. Then the second goal came right after. That was the decisive moment.
“It’s a real shame. The home team were obviously better, but the result is cruel for us. That’s just the way football is. Thedifference was,” Vrba continued.
He went on to mention that there was a huge difference in how the players behaved after gaining and losing the ball. Sparta had a lot of unnecessary lost balls. When it managed to wrestle the ball away from the opponent, it didn’t take long to lose it.
Vrba took losing the ball as the main reason for the defeat. So Sparta didn’t take any nice result from France, only new experience.
Even after the loss, Sparta Prague remains in the second promotion place, but it has the same number of points as Rangers, but thanks to the mutual result, the Prague team is promoted for now. Lyon is sovereign in Group A.
