Spain reaches the final of the Nations League. In the semi-final they beat Italy 2-1, the result was decided in the 88th minute by a Joselu penalty.
The Spaniards started very promisingly, with youngster Yeremi Pino opening the scoring in the third minute. But in the 11th minute, Ciro Immobile scored from a penalty and the game was level.
The Italians could have taken the lead ten minutes later when Frattesi scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
So in the 84th minute, coach Luis de la Fuente substituted Morata and sent on a joker called Joselu. The 33-year-old striker is having the season of his life and a dream he never imagined he would have a few years ago.
De la Fuente couldn’t ignore his great performances in La Liga, where he scored 16 goals in an Espanyol jersey. So in March, even at that age, he made his debut for the national team, scoring two goals in ten minutes on his debut against Norway in a qualifying match.
Now he came on against Italy in the aforementioned 84th minute and once again showed his role as a great joker. Rodri’s shot from outside the box was blocked by defenders and flew into the hands of Donnarumma, only for Joselu to appear just in front of him and direct the ball into the net.
With his third goal in his third national team start, he sent Spain to the final of the Nations League, where La Roja will play Croatia, who were knocked out by the Netherlands a day earlier.
It really is the year of a lifetime for Joselu. His ability to score goals endeared him to Real Madrid, for whom he even started in 2011 and scored immediately, but his career at the Santiago Bernabéu was short-lived.
Now, however, he will return to Madrid and should fill the role of a joker. He is expected to make his debut next week.
