Spain will play France on Sunday for the top spot in the second edition of the Nations League. The first one was dominated by Portugal, who dropped out in the group stage on their way to the defence. Who will do better in the final?
Spain won their Group D thanks to a 6-0 victory over Germany. They dominated the semi-final against Italy from the start, taking the lead at half-time and not allowing their weakened opponents to equalise after the change of sides.
France lost only two points in the group with one draw against Portugal, and beat the Croats and Swedes twice. In the semi-final they were already 0:2 down to Belgium, but in the 90th minute they made an unprecedented turnaround. The Belgians watched in disbelief, missing out on another final, again against France.
Manchester City’s versatile Ferran Torres scored two goals to advance to the trophy game, midfielder Gavi also gave an excellent performance on his debut, and Mikel Oyarzabal, the author of two assists, also deserves praise.
Theo Hernandez, who finally got a proper chance to fight for the national team, had a good performance and a decisive goal against Belgium. Karim Benzema, the most productive player in the Top 5 leagues (8+7), is also in excellent form.
Spain is riding a winning and scoring streak, scoring eight times in the last three games.
France is not doing well, because its defence has stopped working. It has kept a clean sheet in only one of its last seven games.
Despite the results of both teams in the recent past, I think the French will dominate the 2021 Nations League. For a simple reason, a mediocre defense and a weakened midfield will not be enough for the offensively strong Roosters.
