It is already a great success for Spanish women’s football. The women’s national football team has never once reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. And now they’ll be playing for the overall championship.
Standing in her way will be England, traditionally a very strong national team. In the last two championships, she has always fought for bronze, in 2019 in France she finished fourth, in 2015 in Canada she won the bronze medal after winning against Germany.
Now, all’s well that’s worked out for the third time and England has finally made it to the final. Home nation Australia stood in her way, but England had no major problems. Toone put them ahead, Kerr’s goal brought the home side level, but Hemp and Russo gave Albion the lead back.
The English women on their way in the play-offs had to first knock out Nigeria, then Colombia and then the aforementioned Australia. In a group with China, Denmark and Haiti, they advanced from first place and with full points.
It was the Spaniards who had a slightly more dramatic run, first beating Costa Rica 3: 0 and Zambia 5: 0 in the group, but blowing up in their last match against Japan (0: 4).
Their confidence ahead of the play-offs did not suffer, however, as Wilde’s charges successively knocked out the Swiss, Dutch and Swedes to reach their first ever final.
According to the bookmakers, England is the slight favourite. But the matches between the two teams are very evenly matched. The last time the Spaniards and the English met was in July 2022 in the quarter-finals of the EURO, the match went to extra time, where Stanway decided for Albion.
Prior to that, the two countries faced each other at the Arnold Clark Cup in February 2022 and a goalless draw was born. The next encounter between the two sides will not be found until March 2020 at the Shebelieves Cup, where Putellas decided the victory for the Spanish national team in the 83rd minute.
So what to bet on? The Spanish women are playing in good form and are determined to bring home the gold medal. At the same time, an extra day’s rest could help them, and at decent odds it’s a decent opportunity.
