Spain came up empty! Olsen literally worked his magic in goal
The first match at this year’s European Championships was also played by the teams of Spain and Sweden. The football was reminiscent of handball at times, with Spain outplaying the Swedish defence but failing to score.
The first match at this year’s European Championship was also played by the teams of Spain and Sweden. The football was reminiscent of handball at times, with Spain outplaying the Swedish defence but failing to score.
The first big chance of the match came in the 16th minute when Spain’s Dani Olmo scored. Koke found him with a beautiful centre, but Olmo’s header, aimed at the left side of the goal, was deflected out for a corner by Olsen.
In the 29th minute, the two players switched roles. Olmo found Koke with a pass in the box, but he couldn’t deal with the bouncing ball and sent his shot high over the bar.
Ten minutes later, Morata had the Spaniards’ best chance yet. After a big mistake by stopper Danielson, who missed the ball heading behind the defence, Morata came face to face with the goalkeeper. Olsen cut his angle with a run out and Morata unluckily for Spain sent the ball just wide.
Just when it looked as if the half would end with the ball on the Spaniards’ feet, out of nowhere Swedish striker Isak got the biggest chance of the game. He put the first defender on the ground and then shot past Spanish goalkeeper Simon. Unfortunately for Sweden, Llorente got behind Simon and headed the ball onto the bar. Needless to say, Isak’s shot would have probably just missed the target.
The first big opportunity of the second half came in the 60th minute, and it came on the foot of the Swedes. Isak miraculously went through three players and served a beautiful pass for Marcus Berg to score, but to everyone’s amazement he missed the empty net.
Spain’s best chance came in the 90th minute, again after a centre. Sarabia centred, but Moreno’s header went into the middle of the goal and Olsen was again quick to intervene.
Spain thus drew after the first Group E match and surprisingly lost their first points. It’s a golden point for Sweden at the start of the tournament.
