The EURO is over and Spain are the winners. It has beaten all its opponents in the tournament and played some impressive football throughout. England, on the other hand, fell for the second time in a row in the final, last time to Italy.
The match went better for Spain, for whom Nico Williams scored. Cole Palmer then equalised, but Mikel Oyarzabal eventually managed to give Spain the lead back.
“It is incredibly hard to lose a final. I think Spain was the best team in the tournament and they were better tonight in the final. They deservedly won the gold.
But our players were unbelievable, they couldn’t have given more. For me, possession was key in the final, we didn’t have enough control of the ball,” England coach Gareth Southgate said at a press conference .
But he admitted afterwards that he was proud of his team. England were criticised for their play throughout the tournament, but in the end they were not far from the historic feat of winning the European trophy.
“It’s hard to judge so soon after a defeat like this. I think the team did the whole country proud, the players showed tremendous resilience and character. They never gave up until the very end, they fought until the last minutes,” he added.
“To reach the final at two consecutive Euros is something incredible. England has never managed to do that before. But none of that matters. We came here to win, we had the opportunity to win, but we didn’t,” he concluded.
But football is not taking a break, Czech fans are rejoicing with the return of the Chance League this week. After that, the Olympics are on the agenda, followed by other competitions.
