Southampton’s first two goalkeepers were injured in a short space of time. The club from the south of the British Isles was forced to resort to a rather unconventional solution. Saints signed a short-term contract with Argentine goalkeeping legend Willy Caballero, who last wore the jersey of Chelsea or Manchester City in England. The 40-year-old veteran is expected to start as early as Saturday at London Arsenal.
Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster are Southampton’s long-time main goalkeeping duo. When one of them hasn’t come on due to injury, a drop in form or some other fault, the other has always been ready to fill in. But as it is in football life, sometimes you just can’t avoid bad luck.
In Southampton’s last week, both goalkeepers dropped out due to injury, and so the Saints management signed the seasoned veteran Willy Caballero on a short-term, one-month contract.
As mentioned, Caballero has collected a lot of titles and trophies as a substitute goalkeeper for Chelsea or City.
Outside of the British Isles, Caballero has notably featured in the jersey of Spanish side Málaga or Elche. He is also a former Argentina international or a product of the famous Boca Juniors.
Since the end of last season, when the Argentine’s contract at Chelsea expired, the 40-year-old veteran has been without a commitment so far. So we’ll see if coach Ralph Hasenhüttl does indeed put him between the three sticks on Saturday afternoon against Arsenal.
