Tomas Soucek entered the new season in the best way he could. He scored the decisive goal to help West Ham to a 4:2 win over Newcastle. What did he say in his post-match interview for the club website?

Saturday’s game was entertaining right from the opening whistle. West Ham quickly cashed in, got a second goal before half-time and broke the game in their favour with three goals after the change of sides.

“We played very well. Even though we were down twice, we continued to play our game and deserved the win.”

The equalizing goal at 1:1 was examined at length by VAR. The offside was not detected and the goal was awarded to Aaron Cresswell. For a while it looked like Soucek would score, but he didn’t.

“Of course it was my goal. I talked to Cresswell about it. He wants to collect assists, so it was my goal,” Soucek said with a laugh.

But the Czech midfielder’s goal came after all. After a missed penalty by Michail Antonio, he got to the ball the quickest of all the players on the pitch and cleared it to the back post.

“Mikhail missed the penalty kick, which happens in football. I tried to follow the ball and I’m happy that I helped the team with the difference goal to get three points.”

In the second round, West Ham will face a nasty Leicester, who also won their opening game. However, the Hammers will have the home advantage.

“I can’t wait for the home game. I believe that our fans feel the same way, that we will show them a similar performance to Newcastle and that we will be successful again,” Soucek concluded.
