West Ham have indeed gone through a major crisis in recent times, both in terms of play and results. Their first win of 2024 came on 26 February when they beat Brentford 4-2 at home. However, after the Nottingham game, the Hammers recorded a horrific statistic.
Since the new year, just until mid-February, they have played eight games, failing to win a single one. In a month and a half they have picked up just four points and the chair has started to rock considerably under coach Moyes.
Even the fans of the London club were no longer able to cope with the situation, calling for the departure of the current coach. After all, West Ham’s footballers had not scored a goal in three consecutive matches, 240 minutes of net time. The break in the black streak thus came on February 26, just in the win over Brentford.
The Hammers were also victorious in the following game at Everton (1: 3). But then they fell to Freiburg in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final, although they created some really solid chances, especially in the first half.
And it was about playing in the European Cup that Tomáš Souček spoke about when he defended his coach. Needless to say, it was West Ham who won the Conference League winner’s trophy last season.
Soucek defended coach Moyes
“You see what he has achieved. For the first time in the club’s history, we have won three European Cups in a row. The work he has done is incredible. I’m very happy to have been part of it and to have helped make history. The coach played an important role in that,” Soucek defended Moyes in an interview with the BBC.
In addition, the Czech international also defended his teammate Kalvin Phillips, who is visiting London from Manchester City. The 28-year-old Englishman received a red card in the match against Nottingham, then played only 25, 10 and 45 minutes against Burnley.
“I see him every day. He does well in training but it’s hard for him. He hasn’t played properly for two years at Manchester City, that would be difficult for anyone. But we all support him and are with him. He’s a hard worker, which I like. I like his style and I want him to start doing well,” Soucek said.
In any case, the Hammers have to focus on their Europa League semifinal rematch against Freiburg. They will be making up a one-goal deficit at the London Stadium.
