Soon it will be time to break bread! Where does Czech football stand in the coefficient war?

The fight for the coveted fifteenth place in the European coefficient rankings has no end. On the contrary. Individual countries are becoming more and more equal in points! This means that the final breaking of the bread will come in the last two matches of the group stages of the European competitions.

Why 15th place? The 15th place ensures that the country will send five representatives to the European Cups in the 2023/24 season, which is more than crucial for the financial stability of Czech football.

Thanks to the victory of Slavia, which added 0.400 points to the table, and the miraculous draw of the North Bohemian Jablonec, which scored 0.200 points, Czech football jumped to 16th place and is breathing down Croatia’s neck.

But the coefficient math is still wide open. Behind us, it’s literally packed with other hungry countries.

Czech football would need a scenario that sounds clear. Advancement to the spring stage of the European Cups for at least two Czech teams. Ideally, of course, all three teams (Slavia, Sparta and Jablonec) would qualify, but that would be too big a fairy tale, don’t you think?

Distribution of coefficient forces

Trailing the Czech Republic are Cyprus (0.075 points), Turkey (0.1 points), Greece (0.5 points) and Denmark (1.025 points).

Cyprus has two representatives in the ECL and both are on the verge of elimination. Turkey has 3 teams in the game, Besiktas will probably finish last in the Champions League and will be out of the game in the spring. In the Europa League, however, both Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are playing for promotion, with the latter even leading the group from Istanbul.

The Greeks have two teams in play. Olympiakos and PAOK are still in contention for promotion. The champion Olympiakos in the EL and PAOK in the EKL. Ironically, Slovakia can help us with Greece, we would need Slovan Bratislava not to let the team from Thessaloniki (PAOK) in front of them.

Denmark has the biggest gap from us, but they have 4 teams in the game. Jablonec stood up to the Danish Randers in direct competition and did not lose once. The next key match will be on Letná between Sparta and the champions Brøndby IF. Here Czech football must keep all fingers crossed for the Letná team.

The Danes have two representatives in the EL (Brøndby IF, FC Midtjylland) and two in the EKL (FC Copenhagen, Randers). And beware, all teams are still theoretically in the running for the spring European Cups.
