During his career, Vladimír Šmicer was nicknamed “Štístko” and he confirms this nickname long after he is no longer running on the green grass. He was the guest of honour at the Ligue 1 showpiece between Lens and PSG and it went well again.
The former Czech midfielder spent three years at Racing Lens (1996-1999) before leaving for Liverpool. He managed to play 91 games in which he scored 16 goals. Thus, he left a decent mark on the yellow and red club and was definitely not forgotten.
Last weekend, he was invited as a guest of honour for the final match of the round, when Lens challenged table leader PSG at home. The latter had a 7-point lead over Franck Hais’ team and hadn’t lost yet this season.
However, Šmicer brought good luck again, as Lens beat the league champion 3-1 and reduced the deficit to 4 points. However, the fans were mainly amused by Šmicer’s pre-match conversation with the legendary Thiery Henry.
The former Czech footballer was at the pitch with one commentator, while Thierry Henry was on the other side of the pitch in the studio. And Prime Video TV connected the two icons.
“Every time I see you, I think of Istanbul. I think of Liverpool and that legendary final, which for me is the best of the Champions League. I always liked you because I always admired smart players,” the legendary France, Arsenal and Barcelona striker paid tribute to Smicer.
“I hope to see you tonight for a while, because I always looked at your back when we played against each other, ” Šmicer replied in fluent French, making Henry and everyone around him laugh.
Šmicer celebrated his only league title with Lens in 1998. In 2000, a second Czech joined the club, Radek Bejbl, who played two seasons there.
