Luxembourg footballer Gerson Rodrigues was sentenced to 18 months in prison with suspended sentences and fined €1,500. The Slovan star was sentenced by a Luxembourg court just one day after the national team’s match against Kazakhstan.

Gerson Rodrigues excelled in the national team’s home game against Kazakhstan. The talented striker was a key figure for the home team. First he equalised at 1-1 and at the end of the first half he scored an assist for Luxembourg’s decisive goal. Gerson was one of the best players of the match, but one day later his situation changed rapidly.

Charges of Gerson Rodrigues

On Wednesday, a Luxembourg court found Rodrigues guilty of three counts of violence. He can appeal the verdict. The charges related to domestic violence against his former partner and two public conflicts.

The acts were supposed to have happened in March 2019, June and November 2022. In addition to the 1,500 euros, the 28-year-old must also pay compensation to the victims, totalling over 3,700 euros.

His legal representative Guillaume Rauchs has disputed the charges throughout the trial, saying his client now wants to focus on football and family.

Rodrigues was not present at Wednesday’s hearing. The prosecution had asked for a 15-month suspended sentence for him.

Transfer to Slovakia

Slovan engaged Rodrigues in February this year on loan until the end of the calendar year from Dynamo Kiev and so far he has five goals in eight games for the Belasé.

Last week, he played for his national team in the semi-final of the European Championship barrage, where Luxembourg lost 0:2 to later qualifiers Georgia. He has 60 games and 21 goals for the national team.
