Slavia’s footballers played a goalless draw against Icelandic opponents and advanced to the Champions League

A week ago, the women’s team of Slavia Prague won the first match of the qualification for the Champions League group stage in Iceland thanks to Tereza Kožárová’s goal. On Wednesday, on a public holiday, the women coach Karel Piták’s charges had a rematch against Valur Reykjavík. The reigning Czech football champions welcomed them on the pitch in Horní Počernice.

The first half, into which the Slavs entered quite actively, offered a balanced course without a large number of significant scoring opportunities. After a quarter of an hour of play, Szewieczková shot from an interesting position on the border of the big whitewash, but only into the gloves of goalkeeper Sigurðardóttir.

Valur was also trying to threaten the opponent’s goal. A dangerous situation was created in the 33rd minute when Hintzen tried a cross from the left side of the penalty area. The home goalkeeper Lukášová dealt with her shot.

After an unsuccessful direct free kick in the attacking half by Slavia, the Icelanders had a great opportunity. Halldórsdóttir sent a shot from outside the box, which Lukášová knocked over the bar. The teams went into the booths with a 0:0 score.

The Prague club came close to opening the scoring five minutes after the change of sides. After a centre from the right side by Kožárová, defender Viðarsdóttir almost knocked the ball into her own net, her teammate Ásgrímsdóttir kicked the ball off the line.

In the 56th minute, the home team was already enjoying a goal, but the header by Kožárová was previously offside, which was disallowed by the referee. Hungarian head referee Urbanova drew her first yellow card moments later. Jóhannesdóttir was booked for a foul.

After a sprint on the left side, Jensen finished in the 68th minute, but her weak shot went wide of the three posts. From the ensuing standard situation, Ásgrímsdóttir’s close-range shot after a pass into the hexagonal box went over the Slavic goal.

In the 84th minute, a series of blocked shots came in Valur’s penalty area, but coach Pétursson’s charges eventually dealt with the messy situation. At the beginning of the setup, another Icelandic player, Níelsdóttir, fouled for a yellow card.

The spectators in the Upper Bohemian venue did not see the goal, but the home team did not mind. Thanks to the goalless result, supported by a one-goal victory from Reykjavik, the women of Slavia Prague are celebrating their qualification to the Champions League group stage. In addition, they won a prize of ten million crowns.

The women of Sparta are also aiming to participate in the main stage of the prestigious competition. However, they are in a more difficult starting position than their rivals from Sešiv before Thursday’s rematch at AS Rome, which starts at 14:30. In the opening match of the qualifying duel they lost 1::2.
