Slavia repeated ancient history and won against Fenerbahce! How is the public reacting?
The transfer period is over, but there is still a possibility to bring a player on loan. Radim Reznik’s injury forced Viktoria Plzeň to act quickly. A new player is coming on loan to the defence.
Slavia last played Fenerbahce in 1925 before playing in the European Conference League. Back then, the Susians won 5:0 in Istanbul, this time the Slavs won by a smaller margin, but the victory is still very valuable.
In the knockout stage of the European Conference League, the Slavs visited Istanbul. Thanks to goals by Ibrahim Traoré, Oscar Dorley and Ondrej Lingr, they won 3:2. The Susians are taking a light cushion to Prague, which gives them slightly better hopes for promotion than Fenerbahce will have.
Slavia also contributed 0.400 points to the national coefficients ranking with the win. The Czech Republic is fighting for the crucial 15th position with Turkey, so this is a doubly important win.
The fact that the Slavs dominated the game on Turkish soil for most of the game is also pleasing. However, the red and white may be sorry for the second goal conceded, Fenerbahce got it almost for free, thanks to which the Turkish big club is still in the game for promotion.
The football public is of course reacting very positively to the win, but let’s not rest on our laurels. Czech football is far from being won, Sparta failed against Partizan Belgrade at Letná and the one-goal reserve of Slavia still does not give the certainty of promotion.
Public reaction
Football journalist Jan Podroužek also added interesting observations on the match. He praised the performance of Tomáš Holeš and then pointed out that Slavia have managed to score 3 or more goals on European soil several times in recent years.
