The two teams have met once before, but it was in a more elite competition. In the summer of 2019, Slavia and Cluj faced off in the last round of the Champions League. The lucky ones were Susians, who after two 1:0 wins advanced to the group stage.
Now the two teams meet again, but in a different frame of mind and two categories worse competition. Cluj won the league by one point ahead of FCSB, but did not qualify for the Champions League.
CFR fell out with Armenia’s Pyunik Yerevan in the first Champions League preliminary round, then travelled straight to the Conference League preliminary round, where they made it through three opponents.
However, it hasn’t done well in the regular group. Firstly, it only drew with Balkani on its soil 1: 1, then at home it lost to Sivasspor 0: 1. After two matches, they are in the last place in the table with one point and a score of 1::2.
Slavia, on the other hand, is in first place in the table. It has the same number of points as Sivasspor (4), but a better score (4::3). Moreover, it is extremely strong in home games and regularly scores big goals against its opponents.
The key for the Sivas is to win the group. They would advance straight to the eight finals and would not have to fight their way through the 1/16 finals against a Europa League opponent.
At the weekend, Susians tuned up with a 3-0 home win over Liberec, while Cluj beat Petrolul 1-0. After a poor start, they are in fourth place in the table, five points behind the leaders.
The Seškis can score goals, especially at home. That’s why I think we will see at least 3 goals in the game with Cluj.
