Fate has assigned Slavia to the worse of the Dnipro-1/Panathinaikos pair in the third round of the Europa League. In the end, the choice fell on the Ukrainian team, which first fell 1:3 at home and then drew 2:2 in Greece.
Dnipro-1 showed their quality, especially in the rematch, when they went ahead twice. However, it should not be an opponent that Slavia would not be able to cope with.
“I am convinced not only that Slavia is the favourite, but also that Trpišovský’s team will advance,” said former Slavia coach Stanislav Levý confidently in the Sport.cz studio.
The Red and Whites wanted to avoid Panathinaikos, as they had already met in the third round of the Conference League last year. Although the Slavs won 2:0 at home, they were down 0:1 away in the Greek “hell” and it was exciting until the end, when Václav Jurečka scored the decisive goal to advance.
Moreover, Panathinaikos has strengthened since last year and has ambitions to return to the elite where it used to belong. Slavia definitely did not want to return to Athens.
“Slavia’s performance is good. But I’m sure they’re relieved not to play Panathinaikos,” Levý is sure. In addition, Dnipro-1 plays home games in Košice, Slovakia, which means a nice trip for Slavia fans. It shouldn’t be an insurmountable opponent,” the experienced coach added.
Slavia will kick off their European tour on Thursday at 7 p.m., with the return leg a week later in Košice. If the Susians manage to advance, they will face another Ukrainian team, Zorya Luhansk.
