The return of one of the modern Slovak football icons back to his countrymen has been much celebrated. Fans welcomed it all the more when Martin Škrtel gave an interview in which he commented on the new challenge and his injury, which will keep him off the pitch for the time being.
Škrtel decided to return home to Slovakia after a stint at Liverpool or Trabzonspor, choosing Spartak Trnava.
Last year’s third team in the table will pay the experienced stopper a special bonus in addition to an as yet unknown monthly sum. For every fan at a Trnava home game, the burly stopper will receive one euro.
“I didn’t come to Slovakia to get rich and come to earn huge sums of money. I want to help Trnava and be successful here,” Škrtel told Slovak news server Sport Aktuality.
Although he would like to show the fans of Spartak on the pitch as soon as possible, injuries will not allow him to play for the time being. He hasn’t even played a game this calendar year because of it.
“I would not like to mention a specific date. It will all depend on how I feel, how I can bear the load and how my leg reacts.”
Doctors estimate his return to the football field after the upcoming national break, so around 10 September at best.
“We all want it to be as soon as possible, but I think it is premature to set a deadline,” Škrtel concluded.
Trnava have big ambitions this season and so far they are definitely fulfilling them, as they are in second place after the 4th round with 9 points, which they share with Žilina and Slovan Bratislava, who have a game to play.
