Seven losses in eight league rounds and that’s enough! Nathan Jones is off the Southampton bench after four months. A connection that never really worked properly ended with a 1-2 loss to Wolverhampton, despite Saints leading and playing for over an hour against ten.

Jones has commanded Southampton’s bench for eight league rounds since being called up in November. In these he has extracted only three points for the win over Everton. Frequent defeats have brought the Saints down to last place, and they are now four points behind for salvation.

The improved offense hasn’t helped

Jones, from the start of the engagement, incomprehensibly pushed for a three-stopper formation, even though first choice Armel Bella-Kotchap was injured in that position. Southampton did work slightly towards the back, but on the other hand were harmless.

Specifically, his charges scored six goals in eight rounds. While under Jones’s predecessor Ralph Hasenhuttl they were plagued by bad luck in the end, now Southampton’s goals scored were, on the contrary, very lucky.

Breach of club identity

While under Hasenhuttl Saints looked like one team, the atmosphere in the booth has dropped with the arrival of Jones. In January, a club based on a strong academy and offspring spent €58 million on reinforcements, with only Arsenal and Chelsea investing more.

Jones never won the fans over to his side mainly because of his frequent excuses in press conferences. He complained that he had been with the team for too short a time to influence the game and results, and appeased angry audiences with his Luton achievements. He also mentioned the toxicity within the club.

Since the beginning of January, the St. Mary’s Stadium has regularly echoed with boos and even chants against Jones after the final whistle.

And rightly so, as Southampton under his stewardship have fallen to Liverpool, Brighton, Fulham, Nottingham, Aston Villa, Brentford and most recently Wolverhampton.

Ruben Selles, who previously coached Spain’s Valencia under-21 team, will lead the team in the next round against Chelsea. But Southampton will be looking for an adequate candidate to try and save the club from relegation.
