The Czechs also lost the match with Spain and the situation in the group is getting more complicated
The Czech national football team had a tough weekend in the Nations League, playing two away games in the Iberian Peninsula. In the matches against Portugal and Spain, the players showed courage but unfortunately did not score a single goal.
After a promising start, the Czech Republic is now third in the elite Group A. The favourites of the group confirm their role and the Czech team is also being pressed from behind by the unpleasant Switzerland.
Coach Šilhavý praised the players’ approach, but regretted the missed chances
At the post-match press conference, national team coach Jaroslav Šilhavy was disappointed by the inability to score goals. However, he appreciated the approach of all the players who participated in the June meeting.
“We experienced a very good atmosphere and we played a very good game in Spain,” Šilhavy said at the press conference. “We were looking for drama, we were active and dangerous, but unfortunately we didn’t convert the chances,” the Czech pilot regretted.
“I thought they would push us harder, but I think we surprised them a little bit with our own activity and the fact that we played courageously,” Šilhavy said of his players. ” Overall, games like this push us further and all the players approached it like professionals,” the coach was pleased with the attitude of his charges.
He also commented on the criticism of the nomination of Alex Kral
Šilhavý had to deal with health complications of Michal Sadílek, who was replaced by Alex Kral in the first half. “We perceived that he did not play much during the season and we know that his nomination was criticized,” he reacted to the criticism of Kral’s nomination.
But we still see him as an excellent footballer,” he said. “We believe he will make a good move to a team where he will play regularly in the summer,” he said.
Šilhavy is aware of the strength of his opponents, but wants to fight for his chance in September
The group matches will continue in September and the Czech Republic will have a tough task. First they host the dangerous Portuguese at home and then travel to Switzerland to defend their third position. They surprised the Portuguese in yesterday’s home game and won by the narrowest of margins, 1:0.
“I’m not surprised that the Swiss won because they have a really strong team,” he reacted to the Swiss match. “Overall, the development of the group is expected, the Portuguese and the Spanish confirmed their role as favourites,” he is aware of the strength of their opponents.
“We will prepare for the home game against Portugal, which is a tough opponent, but we all know that we can beat them and we will want to get points in the home game,” he believes in the Portuguese. “Or we can go straight to Switzerland for the rescue,” the coach added.
