An expected defeat, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Viktoria Plzeň fell in Barcelona 1:5, with an honorable goal scored by Jan Sýkora. He couldn’t be happy with the result after the match, but he will probably never score a goal at Camp Nou again.

The players of Viktoria Plzeň fulfilled their dream and played a Champions League group stage match. For Jan Sýkora, the joy of the match was perhaps even greater because he managed to beat goalkeeper Macr-André Ter Steger.

His goal reduced the score to 1:2 and it seemed that Viktoria might not have lost by a large margin. However, shortly afterwards the score was increased and the scoreboard showed 5:1 at the end of the match.

“I don’t even know what was going through my head at that moment. Maybe nothing. I had mixed feelings of joy and fatigue. I knew it was 1:2, so there could have been a chance, but unfortunately we almost immediately got to 1:3 and in the second half Barcelona took over,” Sýkora said at the press conference.

He is also a long-time fan of the Catalan side, which made the experience all the more special. “It was a great experience to play here.

The whole team gave everything, but unfortunately their quality is somewhere else. But with this confrontation, we can definitely draw on it for the next matches,” he added.

The Victorians will, of course, have plenty more games like this in the autumn. In a week’s time, they will challenge Inter at home, then travel to Bayern Munich in early October.
