Shocking Premier League table since Ronaldo’s departure from United. The Red Devils would be first!
You don’t play ifs, but facts are facts. Manchester United have picked up the most points of any team in the Premier League since the departure of star Cristiano Ronaldo. Could the transfer of the Portuguese playing legend really be to blame?
You don’t play ifs, but facts are facts. Manchester United have picked up the most points of any team in the Premier League since the departure of star Cristiano Ronaldo. Could the transfer of the Portuguese playing legend really be to blame?
Star Cristiano is not having the best time of his career
The relationship between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United has come to a head after a candid interview on the global TalkTV show with Piers Morgan. In it, the Portuguese star accused his employer of betrayal and didn’t leave a thread dry on manager Erik ten Hag.
Moments later, the two sides decided on a contract termination, leaving Ronaldo a free agent. He played his last game for United on 6 November last year in a 1:3 defeat at Aston Villa.
Ronaldo wore the captain’s armband and was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. However, he failed to score a goal or record an assist in the match, which was expected of a player of his calibre.
The crushing defeat meant a drop to fifth place in the Premier League and fans were vocal about the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s presence on the pitch.
United are a very different team since his departure
But it’s a completely different team since Ronaldo’s departure. The Red Devils have played ten games since then, of which they have won 7, drawn 2 and lost only 1. In terms of numbers, this has meant a gain of 23 points, 20 goals scored and only 9 goals conceded. And that’s the most of any Premier League team.
Although it must be added that the teams at the top have fewer games played, it is still a great achievement. The lion’s share of the goals scored was mainly due to Marcus Rashford, who managed to score eight times.
The great form has lifted United to third in the table, five points behind leaders Arsenal and just two points behind city rivals City, who have a game in hand.
Ronaldo continues to struggle
Ronaldo is not exactly in the best phase of his career. He ended up on the substitutes’ bench at the World Cup in Qatar after scoring the only goal in the group stage. After the World Cup, he signed for Saudi club Al-Nassr, where he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract that will earn him more than 4.5 billion a year.
Even in his new job, he struggled and there was much criticism from the fans over the Portuguese star’s performance, which he partially silenced in his last game against Al-Wehda, in which he scored four goals. Even so, this is not exactly a happy story of one of the best football icons in history.
