Shocking news from MotoGP! A transfer bombshell looms, Márquez could leave Honda and head elsewhere
Is Marc Márquez on his way out of Honda Repsol? This is the question that is currently keeping not only MotoGP fans awake, but also all the experts and maybe even the riders themselves. The legendary Spaniard could move to a satellite team of Ducati.
Is Marc Márquez on his way out of Honda Repsol? This is the question that is currently keeping not only MotoGP fans awake, but also all the experts and maybe even the riders themselves. The legendary Spaniard could move to a satellite team of Ducati.
The speculation has been in the air since the recent Catalan Grand Prix. In the MotoGP paddock, it then intensified and is now even taking on realistic contours. In any case, Marc Márquez is not yet willing to comment on the latest news.
But this is what strengthens the links to the shock switch from Honda to Gresini Racing, a satellite team of the factory Ducati.
Red Bull-owned Speedway magazine even claims that Márquez has decided to end his contract with Honda a year early and join Gresini next year, where he is set to be teammate to his brother Alex Márquez.
However, Motorsport Server also points out that such a deal will be very difficult to see through to a successful conclusion. Neither Repsol nor Estrella Galicia, the two brands that accompany Márquez, have agreed any exit clause with Honda.
The situation is therefore currently very tangled and does not depend, simply put, on Márquez’s decision. “In any case, the eight-time champion has asked the Japanese manufacturer to present him with a plan to hire technical specialists in key areas of today’s motorcycles (aerodynamics, electronics), and Alberto Puig is working on that list,” the aforementioned site reports.
Questions around performance, will the prototype work?
The reason is simple – should Márquez stay at Honda for next season, he simply wants a competitive machine.
Márquez will test the current RC213V prototype at Misano on Monday, after the San Marino Grand Prix. This is the basis for the finished bike for next season and indeed the big question is whether it will represent the change in concept that Márquez has long called for.
For the fact remains that, on top of everything else, the Honda lacks performance and the engine will not change much more until the rules change.
In any case, Márquez noted in an interview with Motorsport that severing relations with Honda would be very difficult. And adapting at Ducati would be no less easy. However, there will be a lot to ask for at Misano during the race weekend. So we’ll have to wait for some more information of a more official nature.
