Shock! Osaka and Williams plummet in the WTA rankings after the Australian Open

Once the first Grand Slam of the season is over and the WTA rankings are updated, fans can look forward to some interesting changes. Stars such as Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin are set for a rapid decline.

The Australian Open is in full swing and has almost completed its first week. But in the second round, Naomi Osaka, the former world number one who dropped out in the third round, won’t appear.

The Japanese tennis player was no match for Amanda Anisimova. She didn’t fare much better at the previous tournament in Melbourne.

In Australia, Osaka now took the court for the first time since the US Open, the first time since the beginning of September. She didn’t get very far in America then either. Overall, she cannot be said to be enjoying a successful career since winning the Australian Open last year.

The Japanese is now 14th in the WTA rankings, but she is set for a rapid decline. As soon as the rankings are updated after the Australian Open, we won’t even find her in the top 80. Osaka will be as high as 84th in the rankings, which will be her worst ranking since 2016 when she was 18 years old.

However, she is not the only tennis player to suffer such a fate. Unusually and staggeringly low, we will be looking for the legendary Serena Williams in the rankings.

The American made her last appearance at Wimbledon and hasn’t competed since. She is now ranked 59th in the rankings, after the update we will find her up to 245th.

Sofia Kenin, currently the 13th player in the WTA rankings, is also facing a big drop. She returned to the courts in January after an unfortunate second half of 2021. We will now look for her at 94th.
