Shock at Stamford Bridge! Champions League winner loses 1:4 to Brentford, Eriksen scores the winning goal
Premier League fans finally got to see club football after the national break and there were some interesting games to watch. One of them was at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea failed to make it through the dress rehearsal before the LM quarter-finals. Brentford took care of that with a sympathetic performance.
Premier League fans finally got to see club football after the national break and there were some interesting games to watch. One of them was at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea failed to make it through the dress rehearsal for the LM quarter-finals. Brentford took care of that with a sympathetic performance.
The visitors started the match actively and soon developed several chances, at the end of which mostly found Ivan Toney.
Firstly, in the 7th minute he tried to outmuscle Mendy after a bad cross, in the 11th minute Henry sent him a great centre from a corner, but the chances remained unused.
Chelsea had their first chance in the 22nd minute when Mount tried his luck from the edge of the box. 10 minutes later Loftus-Cheek also made a great chance, but his shot was straight at Raya.
Raya also had to intervene moments later against an attempt by Ziyech, who tried to curl the ball into the net with his shot, but the Brentford goalkeeper was up against it.
After a rather cautious first half from both sides, the fans were in for some serious action. The second half started with a goal from Rüdiger, who didn’t mess around and sent the Blues into the lead with a fantastic shot from distance.
However, that didn’t last Thomas Tuchel’s team two minutes. Mbeumo presented the ball brilliantly to Janelt in the whitewash and the Brentford midfielder’s fierce shot gave Mendy no chance.
After 4 minutes, the visitors could celebrate again. Once again it was Mbeumo who found Christian Eriksen after a quick counter attack and he made no mistake. The Danish midfielder continues his incredible story.
But it certainly wasn’t all from Brentford. The demolition of Chelsea continued in the 60th minute, which saw some great action on the Raya – Toney – Mbeumo – Toney – Janelt route. The latter found himself in front of Mendy thanks to Toney’s pass and scored his second goal thanks to a great finish.
Kai Havertz could have made the game more dramatic, but his goal was disallowed due to his hand. Moments later, he headed just wide of Ray’s goal.
The Blues couldn’t get back into the game, and in the final minutes they scored again. After a standard situation, the defence failed to clear the ball, which was taken advantage of by substitute Wissa, who headed the ball into the net after 90 seconds on the pitch.
The newcomer to the Premier League thus defeated the reigning European champions 4-1 and secured their 3rd win in the last 4 matches.
The Chelsea players probably imagined their return from the break a bit better. Top 4 shouldn’t have escaped them, but on Wednesday they will face the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid and going into such a game after today’s performance is certainly not ideal.
